Medieval Gambeson 

A gambeson is a quilted garment worn during the Middle Ages as padding and protection against sword or dagger stabs. It was often worn under chain mail or plate armor, or over another quilted defense garment. Gambesons were made in a similar manner to the aketon, but the outer layer could often be covered with a rich textile, like silk, and was often adorned with the coat of arms of the wearer. The gambeson was usually of much finer fabric and often embroidered or otherwise decorated. It was tailored to closely fit the body and was heavily quilted, usually with wool, to provide extra padding. The gambeson was an essential part of a knight's armor and was worn over the shirt of mail and under the plate armor. It was also worn alone or over a mail shirt.
